Soviet 37mm lens known for pronounced bokeh and soft rendering — a popular vintage glass choice for portrait work.
Technical Details
The Mir-1B features an optical construction of 8 lenses in 6 groups with a minimum focusing distance of 0.2 meters. The filter diameter is 52mm, though due to the strongly curved front element, only special adapter rings can be used. The lens weighs 480 grams and has a length of 65mm. The aperture range extends from f/2.8 to f/16 in half-stop increments, controlled via a manual aperture ring without automatic transmission. A notable feature is the fixed lens hood, which is integrated into the lens housing.
History & Development
The Arsenal factory in Kyiv developed the Mir-1B between 1972-1975 as an advancement of the original Mir-1 from 1967. Production continued until 1992, with an estimated 15,000 units manufactured. Unlike Western fisheye lenses, the Mir-1B was primarily designed for scientific documentaries and architectural shots, but through export deals starting in 1978, it also found its way into Western European film productions. After 1991, larger quantities entered the international market.
Practical Use in Film
The Mir-1B was used in Derek Jarman's "The Last of England" (1987) for wide-angle interior shots, creating characteristic distorted perspectives in bunker scenes. Gaspar Noé employed the lens in "I Stand Alone" (1998) for subjective camera movements. The lens requires precise exposure metering, as the curved front element amplifies stray light. At f/5.6, it achieves optimal sharpness, while f/2.8 is used for selective focus with extreme depth-of-field effects.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to the Nikon 16mm f/2.8 Fisheye, the Mir-1B offers less transmission loss but exhibits stronger chromatic aberration. The Canon FD 15mm f/2.8 produces circular image projection, whereas the Mir-1B fills the full frame. Modern alternatives like the Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG surpass it in contrast and color rendition but do not achieve the characteristic "Soviet" image aesthetic with its warm skin tones and slight vignetting.
