Visual language derived from newspaper photography and photojournalism — flat perspectives, stark framing, direct editing. Documentary realism over aesthetic beauty.

The world viewed through the lens of a newspaper—that's the core idea we work with on set when shooting in the Newspaper Film style. The aesthetic comes directly from photojournalism: clear, unembellished image composition, frontal views instead of dramatic deep space, speed in narration. No curved dissolves, no soft focus pulls to flatter. Instead: hard cuts, documentary-like camerawork, as if a reporter just passed by and captured the essentials.

Practically, this means on set: we work with flat lighting setups that model less and clarify more. The camera is often at eye level or slightly elevated—the view of an observer, not an artist. We primarily use normal to slightly wide-angle focal lengths, avoiding extreme telephoto shots or exaggerated bokeh. Camera movements are reduced: pans and dollies serve to inform, not for poetic effect. A classic cut follows the rhythm of the story, not the music.

In the edit, the magic happens—or the deliberate slowdown. We assemble scenes in short takes, editing for content rather than transition effects. Jump cuts are allowed, even desired, if they emphasize immediacy. The sound is often left raw: ambient sound from the location, minimally post-produced music, more industrial than emotional. Similar to Verité shooting or Direct Cinema, we work with a certain coolness towards the material—the audience should interpret for themselves, not be guided.

We often see this aesthetic in newsreels, in investigative documentaries, but also in feature films that aim to make political or social content appear authentic. The camera becomes a witness, not a seductress. This requires discipline: temptations like additional filters, warm color corrections, or exaggerated motion blur must be overcome. Newspaper Film thrives on reduction, on the power of simplicity.
