Wide horizontal pan across landscape or scene—establishes spatial context and scale. Classic for westerns, establishing shots, and geography.

You need an establishing shot for your scene — something that gives the viewer the location and scale in their bones. This is where the panoramic pan comes into play. It's not a simple pan from A to B. Rather, it's a deliberate, often generously conceived camera movement that captures a wide landscape or scenery horizontally. The viewer is essentially sitting in the car, on the horse, or simply in nature — looking around.

Practical application: Set your camera firmly on a tripod or dolly, then initiate the panning movement relatively slowly — not rushed. The speed is crucial here. Too fast, and it becomes action; too slow, and it appears sluggish or indecisive. As a rule of thumb: a complete, natural 180-degree capture should take about 8 to 15 seconds, depending on the mood and editing sequence. You need a clear start and end position — otherwise, the viewer will lose orientation. Unlike a simple pan (e.g., following two people in conversation), this is about spatial information itself. That's the storytelling.

Classic contexts: Western openings over desert landscapes to convey loneliness and vastness. Or in documentaries to introduce a location. Also in drama or thrillers — when you want to show that the character is in an unknown, possibly threatening space. The panoramic pan gives you time to build silence before the first line of dialogue falls. It's pure visual language without words.

Technically, you should pay attention to smooth axes — no jerky movements in the panning axis. If your camera doesn't run smoothly, you'll see it immediately. Focus sharpness is also critical: with wide-angle lenses (28 to 50 mm), you have more leeway; with longer focal lengths (80 mm+), you'll need to use follow focus or accept that the foreground will become softer. Sometimes this is even desired — it adds depth. In editing, you need a clear handle and a clean out — otherwise, the shot will feel incomplete. Panoramic pans are also ideal transitions between scenes when you want to work without a hard cut. They breathe.
