A "pas" (pronounced "pah") involves shifting the focus plane in defined, measurable steps during a running shot. The focus puller works with the numbered dial on the follow-focus system—each step corresponds to a specific change in distance that they have previously marked and documented during rehearsals. This is not continuous pulling, but discrete, controlled movement: an actor walks from the 3-meter mark to the 1.5-meter mark, and the focus follows in two or three targeted pas instead of smoothly.

Practically, it works like this: you measure the positions, sketch the actor's path, determine transition points, and calibrate your focus dial accordingly. During a zoom-in, for example, when the camera moves closer to a dialogue partner, you don't constantly adjust; instead, you shift the focus in 2-3 pas to minimize focus racking and control the visual jump. This is more elegant than continuous pulling and keeps the critical focus in the sweet spot for longer.

The pas approach works particularly well in static or semi-static scenes with clear movement patterns. You choose it when you know continuous pulling appears too nervous, or when your focus distance change is not linear. With unpredictable actor motion—improvised scenes, ad-libs, extended takes—pas is risky; for those, you need classic live pulling with a steady hand and anticipation.

Key Points: Pas requires precise rehearsal and exact markings. You document not only distances but also timing—at which frame the focus should jump. The follow-focus system must then deliver absolute consistency, take after take. You most often see pas in controlled productions with ample prep time, and less in reality or handheld documentary. The line between pas and racking is fluid—some DoPs speak of pas when the focus movement is under 0.5 seconds, and of racking for longer transitions. Your task: recognize which strategy serves the scene, and clarify in advance with the DoP whether they prefer pas or fluidity.
