Individual light-sensitive element on a camera sensor, often confused with pixel.
Definition
A photosite is a single light-sensitive element on the camera sensor. In Bayer sensors, each photosite is sensitive to only one color – the final pixel is calculated by interpolating several photosites.
Practical Application
Marketing often states the number of photosites as "megapixels," which can be misleading. In Bayer sensors, 1 pixel actually corresponds to multiple photosites.
Technical Details
Bayer Pattern: 2x2 grid with 1x Red, 2x Green, 1x Blue. Demosaicing interpolates full color information. Foveon: 3 photosites stacked on top of each other = 1 pixel. Monochrome sensors: 1 photosite = 1 pixel.
