Narrow-beam spotlight that isolates specific details — jewelry, eyes, small props. Creates dramatic accent light without spillage.
On set, you sometimes need light that acts like a laser pointer — precise, focused, relentless. The pin spot does exactly that. It's a compact fixture with an extremely narrow beam angle, used to highlight individual objects, facial features, or accessories without flooding the surrounding area. While your key light models the scene, the pin spot works surgically: a diamond on an ear, a tear on a cheek, the surface of a glass — everything gets its own controlled cone of light.
In practice, the pin spot is used wherever you need accent lighting. For beauty shots, I use it to make eyes sparkle or to create a highlight on cheekbones. In product films, it's your best friend: a piece of jewelry gets its own small spot that makes the material gleam without disrupting the rest of the lighting. In drama, a pin spot on a hand holding a letter or on a stream of tears can intensify emotional moments. Typical units operate with angles between 10 and 25 degrees — significantly narrower than a standard Fresnel. You usually position it on a micro-stand or with a grip arm, because centimeter deviations matter.
Technically, the pin spot is usually an LED fixture or a halogen spotlight with a lens and shutters. The advantage of LED: no heat radiation, which is crucial for close-ups (eyes, face). The shutters allow you to cut the light edge sharply — not let it bleed out like with diffuse light. You'll barely notice the pin spot in the edit, but in the image, you'll see its work everywhere: the captivating detail that draws the eye, the small trail of highlights that creates depth. Important: Pin spots are unforgiving — every unevenness, every bead of sweat is emphasized. This is both intentional and a feature.
Combined with your main lighting (see three-point lighting system) and reflective material, the pin spot becomes a subtle weapon of visual composition. Shadow construction, depth staging, emotional focus — all tasks that the pin spot elegantly solves.
