Cinematic strategy deploying protagonist's subjective view as voyeuristic immersion — no audience visible in frame. Creates emotional discomfort or false intimacy.

Subjective perspective as a narrative tool in cinema is most effective when the viewer is unsure whether they are seeing themselves or merely what the character sees. In the POV strategy, the camera disappears behind the eyes of an acting person—the gaze becomes an immediate experience. This creates a peculiar intimacy: you are inside the character's head, sharing their perception, yet remaining invisible. There is no reflection, no moment where we could see the observing person in a mirror or a reflective surface.

In dramatic cinema, this primarily functions as a psychological instrument. Consider moments when a character observes, peeks, or hides—the camera becomes a weapon of their attention. This creates an uncomfortable complicity: we become voyeurs, even if we don't consciously want to be. The viewer is on the wrong side of the gaze. This becomes particularly effective when the POV perspective is combined with visual distortions—blurred edges, zooms on details, trembling movements—which indicate that an objective camera is not at work, but rather subjective perception is being depicted.

Practically on set, this means the camera is positioned exactly at the character's eye level, or even lower if they are sitting or lying down. No establishing shot contextualizes the observing person. You film only what they can see—and often consciously no more. The framing becomes tight, almost claustrophobic. In post-production, this is enhanced through sound design—we hear the character's breathing, sometimes even their heartbeat—and through editing rhythm that mirrors the pulse of their attention.

The line between immersive storytelling and ethically questionable strategy is fluid. A POV shot can be used just as effectively for suspense and psychological depth as for the reproduction of power structures or invasiveness. The medium is neutral—the intention is decisive. Whoever uses this perspective must be aware that it automatically draws the viewer into the position of the actor, not the victim.
