You know this from shooting: you've built up a confrontation between two characters, the camera follows their gazes, the music swells — and then comes that one line, that one gesture, that tips everything over. That's the pointe. It's not the climax in terms of volume or movement, but the dramaturgical turning point where the scene's internal logic outsmarts itself.
In practice, it works like this: you're directing and notice during shooting that a scene, while technically sound, lacks impact. The reason is usually that the pointe is missing or comes too late. The pointe must be *crafted* — through tension, anticipation, small contradictions between what the character says and what they do. When you then find the right spot in the edit where this tension is released, the scene works. A classic example: a character vehemently defends a position, and at the last moment, it's revealed that they themselves are doing the opposite. The audience has unconsciously suspected this — the pointe makes it explicit.
