Private Line

Dedicated audio feed between director and specific crew — bypasses main production line. Critical for covert cues when main comm is saturated.

On set, you sometimes need a line that only two people can hear—the director and a specific individual. The Private Line does exactly that: it's a separate, encrypted, or dedicated audio connection that bypasses the main comms. While the production manager, cinematographer, and ten others are chattering on the open production line, the director speaks directly to the First AC or Key Grip via Private Line—without the rest of the crew knowing that critical focus adjustments are being discussed.

Practically, this works through separate wireless headphones or via its own channel on the intercom system. For large productions with multiple cameras and complex workflows, this isn't a luxury but a necessity. The main comms eventually become a constant chatter: the locations manager reports a restricted area, driving safety issues a notice, set dressing calls for props. The director's discreet instruction to the DoP gets lost in that. With Private Line, communication remains precise and confidential—especially important when dealing with issues that not everyone needs to know about. An actor doesn't notice the lens is being corrected. The crew doesn't realize a shot is being aborted.

Technically, you need an intercom matrix with multiple channels or a wireless system that supports separate channels. The sound mixer ensures the Private Line runs stably and doesn't bleed into the main feed. For outdoor shoots with a lot of radio traffic, signal clarity is essential—no static, no feedback. Some productions even use a Private Line specifically for the on-set medic or the producer to clarify sensitive information without causing panic on set.

The advantage also lies in efficiency: instead of asking for a quick boom adjustment over the main comms, interrupting six other instructions, you coordinate with the boom operator on Private Line and do it discreetly. This saves time and keeps the production line clear for genuine emergencies. The only important thing is that who has which Private Lines is agreed upon beforehand—and you document it in the radio plan so it doesn't escalate on the next take.
