Cheaply printed sensationalist stories of early 20th century — detectives, Westerns, sci-fi on poor pulp paper. Its visual grammar (garish colors, exploitative imagery) shaped B-movies and genre cinema.

Pulp cinema draws from a very specific aesthetic attitude: exaggeration instead of subtlety, visual catchphrase instead of psychological depth. Working with pulp means working with color as a weapon — garish red, yellow, and orange tones on cheap stock, meant to burn into memory. You notice it immediately on set: the production design chooses not what is realistic, but what would look good on a blurry cover. This has nothing to do with nostalgia. It is conscious primitivism as a stylistic device.

The literary source material — those magazines and periodicals from the 1920s to the 1950s — dictates a specific narrative structure: rapid cuts between plot threads, no boring exposition, straight into the deep end. The cinematographer works here with high contrast, strong top lighting (Film Noir heritage) or deliberately flat, almost comic-book-like lighting. Tarantino brought this back in the 1990s — not meant ironically, but as a legitimate cinematic language. The jump cuts, the surprising sound leaps, the soundtrack explosions — that comes from pulp.

Practically, this means: work with archetypes instead of characters. The detective isn't psychologically nuanced, he acts. The woman isn't ambivalent, she is mystery or danger or both. The violence isn't documentary, it's spectacle — long slow-motion takes, unrealistic blood patterns, everything exaggerated. The same happens in editing: no subtle cut between two shots, but lingering on a shot, then a cut like a blow.

Current relevance: Pulp aesthetics dominate B-movies, grindhouse reconstructions, and deliberately "trashy" styled genre films. Netflix series use pulp compositions. And in the streaming age, a new pulp literature has established itself digitally — plots condensed to 90 minutes, speed instead of nuance. As a cinematographer, you quickly understand: pulp is a radical rejection of refinement. It's not about being elegant. It's about hitting hard — visually, emotionally, viscerally.
