When a screenplay goes into production and suddenly the chemistry isn't right—or the financing imposes new demands—that's when a rewrite happens. This isn't polishing dialogue. This is a complete re-imagining: another writer tears apart the structure, completely rewrites scenes, and pulls characters in different directions. Sometimes this happens four weeks before shooting begins. Sometimes during production, when the dailies show that an entire subplot isn't working.
The crucial difference from a classic revision pass: with a rewrite, the original author's voice often disappears completely. The new version can have a different tone—less funny, darker, more action-packed. Scenes that were three pages are cut to one or deleted entirely. A character conceived as 30 years old suddenly becomes 45 because the new writer needs it that way or the actor is available. This is radical intervention, not cosmetic craftsmanship.
On set, you notice it immediately: the new version limits your options during shooting or unexpectedly opens up new ones. An actor who has trained for text A receives text B. Lighting setups must be adjusted if locations are cut. The editor suddenly has less raw material for a scene that is supposed to be the same length. The rewrite ripples through the entire production process.
This is financed by the production company or the broadcaster—rewrites cost between 15,000 and 50,000 Euros, depending on the writer and scope. Sometimes an established screenwriter is brought in who delivers within two weeks. Sometimes it's someone from a publishing house or a studio's secondary division who works cheaply and quickly. The original author is usually no longer consulted and may even receive a creation credit, which must acknowledge the new version—this is stipulated in the rules of film associations.
A rewrite is a sign that something went wrong in development or that the requirements have changed. Sometimes it saves the production. Sometimes it just creates chaos.
