Sensitograph

You need a reliable method to truly know your film stock—not just the manufacturer's specification on the box. This is where the sensitograph comes in. The device exposes a test strip with a precise gradient, from completely dark to maximum brightness. This strip is developed and then measured—the result is the sensitogram, a curve that shows how the film reacts to different exposure amounts. Practical: You immediately see where the curve bends, where the maximum dynamic range lies, and how color reproduction is distributed across the tonal values.

In the digital age, this is often underestimated, but for classic film production—and also for hybrid workflows—it remains essential. Some DoPs still conduct their own tests, especially when working with unusual film stocks or needing to calibrate old inventory. The sensitograph provides objective data: gamma value, contrast index, maximum optical density. This isn't guesswork, it's a measured value. With a color negative roll, you can identify color casts that have developed over time. For S-16 material, it helps redefine the exposure safety margin.

Classically, labs use the sensitograph according to ISO standards—the curve tells you if the development is correct or if there's drift. Some set DoPs work with it in practice: they send a test film through the lab, get the sensitogram back, and adjust their exposure zones accordingly. This effort is particularly worthwhile for film prints or when dealing with used material. The term is also historical: in the past, it was a mechanical device with precise gray wedges and flash exposure. Today, much is digitally simulated, but the method remains the same—create a defined gradient, develop, measure.

In short: The sensitograph is your calibration between theory and reality. What the film manufacturer promises and what your material actually delivers—these are often two different things. With the sensitogram in hand, you're on set with real knowledge, not just hope.
