Silent

Recording without sound — camera rolls, audio stays off. Standard for VFX plates or when ADR is planned from the start.

The camera is rolling, but the sound is off — that's the core operation of a Silent. You don't need sound equipment on set, no cable tangles to the recorder, no sound designer within earshot. Instead, you document purely visually what's happening in front of the lens. The classic application: VFX shots, where every frame will be manipulated in post-production and the original sound plays no role anyway. Or scenes you'll re-record later — like dialogue in a noisy environment where a clean live recording is impossible.

In practice, a Silent works like any other shot: camera, lighting, movement, take number — all identical. The only difference is the lack of a sound connection. On set itself, you don't need a clapperboard because no sync point is necessary. Some crews simply note the take number visually in the frame or use a simple digital log. This saves time and complexity, especially in action scenes or stunts where the sound crew would only be a hindrance anyway.

A common misunderstanding: Silent doesn't automatically mean a lack of quality. The cinematography, lighting, and composition must be just as precise as with a sound recording — often even more so, because the audio track doesn't function as a dramatic element. The visual storytelling carries the entire burden. You often see this with establishing shots, pure action sequences, or montages that will later be underscored with voice-over or music.

In the workflow, Silent also differs in editing: the editor works with video-only files, no audio sync process is necessary. This significantly speeds up the initial rough assembly. It only becomes problematic if you later realize you actually need an acoustic element — like footsteps or object sounds. Then you either have to re-record (→ ADR) or do Foley work. Therefore, the decision for Silent is always a conscious dramaturgical and productional one — not an oversight, but a strategy.
