Hong Kong manufacturer of affordable cine lenses and anamorphic adapters for DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

Technical Details

SLR Magic lenses primarily use manual focus with precise focus rings (180-270° rotation) and de-clicked aperture rings. The HyperPrime series offers apertures from T0.95 to T2.8, while the Anamorphot series provides 1.33x and 2x anamorphic factors. Typical minimum focusing distances are 0.3-0.8m depending on focal length. The lenses utilize multi-coated glass elements (6-11 elements in 4-8 groups) and produce characteristic lens flares as well as creamy bokeh through specially calculated aperture shapes.

History & Development

SLR Magic started in 2011 with lens adapters for Panasonic GH cameras and launched its first HyperPrime 23mm T1.7 in 2013. In 2015, the Anamorphot series followed with the 1.33x-50mm, and in 2017, the company expanded to include full-frame lenses. In 2019, SLR Magic introduced PL-mount versions for professional cinema cameras. Production is in limited batches, often leading to individual lenses selling out and becoming collector's items.

Practical Use in Film

SLR Magic lenses are mainly used in independent films and low-budget productions where their characteristic look is appreciated. The HyperPrime 50mm T0.95 has been used in several documentaries for available light shooting. The Anamorphot series enables true anamorphic optics without the budget for Cooke or ARRI glass. Typical workflows require precise focus pulling due to shallow depth of field and manual exposure control because of de-clicked apertures.

Comparison & Alternatives

SLR Magic positions itself between consumer lenses and high-end cine glass from Zeiss or Cooke. Comparable manufacturers include 7artisans or Meike, but SLR Magic offers more consistent quality control. Modern alternatives like Sigma Cine lenses provide sharper imaging but less characteristic rendering. For budgets over €50,000, productions usually opt for established brands with service networks, while SLR Magic remains unrivaled in the €2,000-€8,000 class.
