Station cinema

In the 1950s and 60s, improvised cinemas emerged in European train station halls—particularly in Germany, France, and Italy—fundamentally differing from established art-house cinemas. These venues showed what critics derisively called "station cinema": serial Westerns, cheap productions from the East, softcore material, and genre films that would never have found a place in regular movie theaters. The proximity to the train station was programmatic—fleeting audiences, short dwell times, quick turnover. Cinema as a waiting hall function, not a cultural institution.

The term became a battle cry for film criticism. While Cahiers du cinéma and later the New German Wave established the auteur film as an artistic paradigm, station cinema symbolized everything rejected: standardized mass-produced goods, lack of artistic ambition, aesthetic no-man's-land. A director whose film ended up in station cinema was considered a failure. The programming was completely uncurated—whatever was cheap to acquire was shown. Technically often catastrophic: worn-out prints, faulty projection, auditoriums without any climate control.

Paradoxically, film studies later discovered precisely these popular wares as source material for genre research. What was considered cultural dregs became the basis for Western studies, exploitation analysis, and popular film research. Station cinema films show unfiltered what audiences really wanted to see—without artistic pretension, without curatorial mediation. This makes them historically valuable, even if no contemporary saw it that way.

The physical locations disappeared with television and later with the multiplex cinema. But the term remained as a cultural-historical marker—for the moment when film criticism still believed it could distinguish between "real" and "fake" cinema. Today, station cinema is more of a nostalgic term. The distinction itself has become invalid.
