Before each shot, an assistant holds a slate into the frame — it displays the scene number, take numbers, sometimes the date and camera configuration. The clap sounds, the slate snaps shut, and the take begins. This simple gesture is an organizational tool that makes a critical difference between the set and the editing bay. Without a slate card, the editing editor quickly becomes a detective, sifting through hundreds of minutes of footage and having to guess which take was the second, which was the fifth.
Title cards serve multiple functions simultaneously: they mark the beginning of a new shot, document the production chronology, and later enable synchronous connection between camera and audio recordings — especially when working with separate sound devices. On digital sets, the function has remained the same, only the technology has changed. Some cameras write metadata directly into the file, but the physical title card remains standard because it is visually immediately recognizable and does not depend on data loss. For archiving projects or when footage moves between different studios, the visible slate is the most reliable identifier.
In practice, a ritualized workflow often emerges: the production assistant or second assistant camera fills out the slate — legibly, large enough for the camera and monitor to read. The focus puller ensures the slate is in focus, as a blurred title card is useless. Some sets use colored chalk markers for quicker overview, others rely on digital display boards directly linked to camera documentation. During editing — or when managing log notes — the title card is displayed as a reference point, indexed, and often removed later when the editor makes the final cut. In documentaries or for special narrative techniques (essay film, meta-reflection), title cards remain visible and become a design element.
The most important thing: title cards create transparency between all departments. A good title card costs five seconds per take and saves the editor two hours of confusion.
