1K tungsten Fresnel fixture — compact standard light between Baby and Junior, used for medium-range fill and key lighting on set.
Technical Details
The Tweenie typically uses a 650W halogen bulb (FKW or EHD) at 120V, or a 1000W version for 220V in European models. The housing measures approximately 25 x 20 x 30 cm and weighs between 3.5 and 4.5 kg depending on the manufacturer. The 5-inch Fresnel lens (127mm diameter) produces an illuminance of approximately 2,800 lux at 3 meters in spot position (15°). In flood position (50°), the intensity drops to about 600 lux at the same distance. Modern LED Tweenies use 40-60W LED arrays with 5600K daylight or bi-color variants between 3200K and 5600K.
History & Development
Mole-Richardson introduced the first Tweenie in 1963 as the Type 2831 in Hollywood to fill the gap between the Inky and the Baby. Arri followed in 1971 with the Arrilite 650, which became the standard in Europe. In the 1980s, Lowel also established themselves with the Tota-Light, along with other manufacturers. Since 2010, LED Tweenies like the Arri L5-C or LitePanel Astra have been conquering the market, increasingly displacing the halogen versions.
Practical Use in Film
Tweenies are used as fill light in classic three-point lighting setups or as hair light for portraits. In "Blade Runner 2049," Roger Deakins used Tweenies for subtle facial fill light in close-ups. In interviews, they are often positioned as kicker lights from the side to emphasize contours. Their compact design allows them to be used in confined spaces where larger fixtures won't fit. The limited light output at greater distances and the heat generation of halogen versions in small rooms are problematic.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to the 1000W Baby, the Tweenie offers more mobility with 35% less light output. LED panels like the Litepanels Gemini 2x1 often replace multiple Tweenies today with their broad, soft light. Dedolight systems with focusable 150W lamps offer more precise light shaping but less area coverage. For limited power supply or battery operation, modern LED Tweenies are the first choice, while halogen versions remain competitive for tight budgets and available mains power.
