The Moscow Film School shaped the cinematic visual language of the 20th century like no other institution. Founded in 1919, a culture of teaching and research emerged there that understood montage not as a technical craft, but as the grammar of seeing. Those trained there didn't just learn camera technique or editing – they internalized a philosophy of visual design that still resonates today when working with Soviet films or directors influenced by them.

The teaching triad of Eisenstein, Pudovkin, and Kuleshov formed the backbone of this education. Each represented their own montage aesthetic: Eisenstein the intellectual montage, where cuts themselves generate meaning; Pudovkin the narrative, psychological montage; Kuleshov the experimental variant, which showed how the viewer unconsciously combines images. This becomes relevant on set or in the editing room when one needs to understand why a Soviet film from the 1920s evokes emotions through mere sequence of cuts, without actors or music contributing much. This school taught: The cut creates meaning, not the image alone.

In practical terms, this means: cinematographers shaped by this tradition – and indirectly anyone who later worked with their films or their students – think in sequences of shots. Framing, movement, focus – all of this was conceived with montage in mind. If you work today with a Ukrainian or Russian DoP whose lineage goes back to this school, you notice immediately: they don't plan individual shots, they plan the sequence of cuts. The camera is placed where it provides the best raw material for the editor, not where it offers the most beautiful composition.

The radical reform of cinematic perception that originated from this institution continues to have an impact on contemporary advertising, music videos, and art-house cinema. Whether one consciously attributes it or not: anyone who works with montage principles, who understands that editing creates meaning, stands in a direct line to those early Soviet experimenters who taught and were trained at this school.
