Anamorphic lenses squeeze a wider image onto the sensor by compressing the light horizontally. In post-production, the image is then de-squeezed – the result is a true 2.39:1 Scope image that utilizes the entire sensor, rather than having black bars at the top and bottom.
The Anamorphic Look
Oval bokeh instead of round. Horizontal lens flares that streak across the entire image. Slight distortion at the edges of the frame. Stunning depth-of-field transitions. This is why Hollywood blockbusters look different from YouTube videos – even if both are in 2.39:1.
Squeeze Factors
2x Squeeze (classic): Panavision, Hawk V-Lite, Kowa. 1.5x Squeeze (modern compromise): Atlas Mercury, DZOFilm Pavo. 1.33x Squeeze (for 16:9 sensors → 2.39:1): Sirui, Vazen. The higher the squeeze, the more pronounced the anamorphic characteristics.
