A medium-strength diffusion filter by Tiffen with warm, milky character perfect for balanced soft-focus effects in dialogue and emotional scenes.

Technical Details

The Tiffen Classic Soft 1/4 is the medium-strength variant with a controlled microstructure on the glass surface. This structure selectively diffuses high-frequency image details, creating a warm, milky softness. The diffusion strength reduces contrast by approximately 15-20%, with a light reduction of 1/4 stop. The filter is available in standard sizes from 77mm to 138mm diameter, as well as 4x4" and 4x5.65" drop-in filters.

The Classic Soft Filter Series in Comparison

The three strengths differ significantly:

  • 1/8: Minimally visible, subtlest skin softening, best detail retention
  • 1/4: Clearly milkier, perfect balance for most productions
  • 1/2: Strong velvety look, noticeable contrast reduction, very intimate

The 1/4 filter is considered the "gold standard" by professional cinematographers – it is the ideal tool between subtlety and a discernible effect.

Usage on Set

The Classic Soft 1/4 is preferably used for:

  • Dialogue scenes: Flattering for faces in conversations
  • Close-ups of actors: Skin softening without loss of sharpness
  • Romantic sequences: Emotional depth with a warm aesthetic
  • TV series: Consistent look across many episodes
  • Portraits and beauty shots: Ideally with focal lengths over 85mm

Comparison: Classic Soft 1/4 vs. Glimmerglass 1/4

Both filters in the 1/4 strength differ in their characteristics:

  • Classic Soft: Warm, milky, velvety effect – very intimate
  • Glimmerglass: Brighter, sparkling, glittering effect – more elegant

Choose Classic Soft for emotionally intimate scenes and character development. Choose Glimmerglass for elegant, precise portraiture with less softening.

Practical Tips

  • Focal length: Most effective at 85mm and longer; barely noticeable below 35mm
  • Camera sensor: Less effect is visible with LED lighting compared to tungsten light
  • Light composition: Optimal with point lights that develop halo effects
  • Skin types: Particularly advantageous for mature skin and for female characters

Film Examples

Cinematographers like Russell Carpenter systematically used similar Classic Soft filters for portraits ("Titanic" 1997). The filter is still used today in high-quality TV series such as "Big Little Lies" and "The Crown" to create emotional intimacy in dialogue scenes.
