A subtle diffusion filter by Tiffen that creates gentle soft-focus with a milky, intimate character while preserving image sharpness.

Technical Details

The Classic Soft 1/8 by Tiffen is the most subtle filter in the Classic Soft series. The glass surface has a controlled microstructure with fine irregularities that gently scatter high-frequency image details. Light loss is approximately 1/6 stop with a transmission of 98%. The filter is available in standard sizes from 77mm to 138mm in diameter, as well as 4x4" and 4x5.65" drop-in filters. The result is a warm, milky soft focus effect without sparkle.

Differences Between Classic Soft and Glimmerglass

The crucial difference is the characteristic of the diffusion effect:

  • Classic Soft: Creates a milky, velvety look with uniform softening
  • Glimmerglass: Creates a sparkling, elegant look with characteristic sparkle

Classic Soft appears warmer and more intimate, Glimmerglass appears brighter and more technical. Choose Classic Soft for emotional intimacy, choose Glimmerglass for elegant, precise aesthetics.

On-Set Usage

The Classic Soft 1/8 is preferably used for:

  • Intimate Dialogue Scenes: Interpersonal closeness without visual artifice
  • Romantic Moments: First kisses, seduction scenes, embraces
  • Portraits with Emotional Depth: Character studies and psychological moments
  • Retro Shots and Nostalgia: The past with a warm, velvety quality
  • TV Series: Episodic continuity through a consistently diffused look

Filter Series: 1/8, 1/4, 1/2

  • 1/8: Minimally visible, almost true to life, best detail retention
  • 1/4: Clearly milky effect, good balance between effect and detail
  • 1/2: Strong velvety look, noticeable contrast reduction, very intimate

Comparison with Alternatives

Unlike Pro-Mist filters, which also reduce contrast, Classic Soft primarily affects sharpness. Black Pro-Mist combines both effects. Digital alternatives in DaVinci or Fusion can simulate the effect but do not achieve the natural, organic quality of real glass filters. The Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 offers a similar effect with a less warm character.

Film and Series Examples

The Classic Soft Filter was used in romantic dramas like "The Notebook" (2004). In "The Crown" (Netflix), the cinematography team uses similar subtle diffusion filters for emotional queen portraits. This filter is also used in high-end TV series for consistent, flattering portraiture.
