Cooke S5: Modern prime lens series from Cooke featuring improved optical performance and /i Technology for metadata transfer.

Technical Details

All S5/i lenses feature an identical 110mm front element, a uniform 95mm filter thread, and weigh between 2.8kg (18mm) and 4.2kg (135mm). Focusing is achieved via a 300° rotation angle, and aperture adjustment via 85°. The /i Technology transmits metadata such as focal length, aperture value, focus distance, and depth of field in real-time to compatible camera systems. The construction is based on 16-20 lens elements per lens with special Cooke coatings for minimal reflections. Available focal lengths: 18mm T1.4, 25mm T1.4, 32mm T1.4, 50mm T1.4, 75mm T1.4, 100mm T1.4, 135mm T2.8, and a 40mm T2.0.

History & Development

Cooke launched the S5/i series in 2017 as the successor to the S4/i. Development time: four years under Chief Designer Iain Neil. Longer focal lengths were added in 2019, and the "Full Frame Plus" variant for larger sensors in 2021. Production is entirely by hand in Leicester, England, using Cooke's grinding and coating techniques.

Practical Use in Film

Roger Deakins used S5/i lenses in "1917" (2019) for close-ups. "The Crown" (Seasons 4-6) was shot entirely with S5/i for consistent skin tones. The organic look works well for character dramas and period films. Practical advantages: uniform T1.4 aperture across all focal lengths, precise focusing for Steadicam work, minimal focus breathing with follow focus systems.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to Zeiss Supreme Primes: less clinically sharp, more image character. ARRI Signature Primes offer similar organic qualities at 30% higher cost. The S4/i predecessor works for smaller budgets but does not cover full frame. S7/i Full Frame Plus for documentaries (heavier), Panchro/i Classic for the vintage look of the original Speed Panchros.
