The curtain functions in editing like a physical drape in a theater—a line or shape moves across the image, revealing the next scene behind it. Unlike a cut or a dissolve, the movement remains visible and becomes a stylistic element. The classic version: a vertical line moves from left to right or top to bottom across the screen; the new scene is visible behind it. Technically, it's realized in NLE (Non-Linear Editing) via a standard transition—Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci have long had this in their libraries.
Historically, the curtain was a favorite device of classic Hollywood and the 1940s/50s—especially in musicals and melodramas, to separate scenes spatially and temporally. Today, it primarily functions as a retro signal or a deliberate playful quote. It's no longer used out of practical necessity, but to trigger a specific aesthetic: nostalgia, comedy, pastiche. The Wes Anderson sphere has rediscovered it—there, the curtain becomes visual grammar, a rhythmic element between scenes. It also stubbornly persists in children's and family films because it appears playful and the audience expects it.
On set itself, the curtain doesn't exist—that's purely post-production. In editing, however, one should know: the curtain only works if the timing is right. Too slow, it appears sluggish and dated immediately; too fast, it loses its graphic power. The optimum is usually between 0.3–0.8 seconds of transition duration. The direction is also important—a curtain from left to right suggests narrative progression; from bottom to top appears more elegant and sophisticated. Variants: the horizontal curtain (top/bottom), the iris curtain (circular), the diagonal. Each form alters the emotional reading.
In modern practice: use sparingly. One curtain per film can have character; three per sequence seem antiquated. It works best as a deliberate stylistic break—when the rest of the editing grammar is clean and contemporary, a single curtain provides an accent. Or consistently as a trademark, if the project justifies it. With the right curves in the motion path, even a simple standard curtain can be made into something unique—don't accelerate linearly, but adjust the easing. That's the difference between a lazy transition and skilled craftsmanship.
