The opening credits determine how a film draws you in. Not just legally — but emotionally, rhythmically, setting the tonal course for the next two hours. You sit in the dark theater, the first music plays, and viewers immediately know whether they can expect drama, action, or a cinematic work of art. The editing of the opening credits is not administrative. It is sound design, typography, pacing in one form.

Practically, opening credits function in two modes: over black — classic, elegant, focused — or over moving scenes (so-called "title sequences over picture"), where names are superimposed over the initial shots. The first mode allows you maximum control: music, editing rhythm, and graphics work without competition. Every cut lands. You can play with typography, with transitions, with pauses. The second mode integrates the opening credits into the narrative — the first scene is already being told while the credits roll. This saves time but also creates complexity: the legibility of the names must be guaranteed, while the visual storytelling must not be stifled.

Length is your tool. One minute of opening credits feels concise and modern. Five minutes — as with Tarantino or the classic Bond sequences — become a standalone work of art. In editing, this means: tempo control through cut frequency (fast cuts = energy; long takes = deliberation), transition style (hard cuts vs. dissolves), and the integration of music. The opening credits only work if the editing and sound tell the story in sync — every cut should fall on a musical accent or deliberately work against it.

Standard elements: Production company(s), main actors in descending order of importance (governed by contracts), direction, cinematography, editing, essential crew positions, producers. In the editing itself, you need dummy textures for size adjustments already in the rough cut — never readjust only in finalization. The sound editor must be involved early: gaps in the opening credits often arise because music and visual narrative were not synchronized. And remember: the editing of the opening credits determines the editing tempo of the entire film — a fast, energetic opening announces a different rhythm than a slow, atmospheric start.
