Dramaturg

The dramaturg works long before the first clapboard falls — they are the critical reader in the room, asking questions others overlook. While the director and writer are stuck in the creative vortex, the dramaturg looks at the architecture: Do the scenes build upon each other? Where does the internal logic break down? What emotional promises does the first scene make, and does the last one fulfill them?

On set, you often only notice their influence later in the edit. A good dramaturg has worked ahead with the screenwriting team — not to stifle creativity, but to avoid wear and tear. They read thirty versions of the third act, suggesting where a scene undermines a character's motivation, or where two plot threads compete instead of reinforcing each other. With the director, they discuss which thematic lines must hold to prevent the film from fraying. With the writer, they work on depth of field — not more dialogue, but better dialogue.

This is not censorship, but quality control through a second pair of eyes. The dramaturg knows the classic pitfalls: a character who must act but remains passive. Conflicts that don't escalate because the writer fears consequences. Twists that surprise instead of convince. They don't rewrite — they mark the places where rewriting is necessary and explain why.

In German-language production, the dramaturg is firmly established, especially in public television and art films. In the Anglo-American studio system, the role is more diffuse — story editors and script consultants often share these tasks. On larger projects, the dramaturg sits in production meetings; some even read rough cuts and provide notes on pacing. Some are writers who no longer want to write but prefer to think. Others are playwrights or theorists who know structure like their craft.
