Craft of building tension and pacing within a script — deliberate placement of revelations, act breaks, turning points. The architecture before cinematography begins.

Dramaturgy is not a theory you look up; it's the craft that decides whether a viewer stays in their cinema seat or checks their watch. It's about the conscious placement of information, conflicts, and turning points over the duration of a film. You don't construct a story; you construct the experience of that story. That's the difference.

In practice, this means you don't just ask "What happens?" but "When does the viewer learn it, and what tension arises from this temporal arrangement?" A secret revealed too early loses its power. A twist that feels logical because you've subtly placed all the clues – that's dramaturgy. The timing of revelations, the length of a scene, the pause before the next piece of information – these are your tools. A good dramaturg thinks in rhythm. First acts require different pacing than third. Exposition cannot be frontal information; it must be woven into conflict. Character development doesn't work through monologues but through the sequence of decisions under pressure.

On set, you might notice little of this directly – dramaturgy is the work of the screenwriter and the director. But as a cinematographer, you see the consequences: Scene-by-scene dramaturgy determines how long you stay in a shot, which moments need to be held visually, which pass quickly. In the edit, dramaturgy becomes physical reality – through editing rhythm, through the length of pauses, through sound design that builds tension. A cut at the wrong time can destroy a dramatic twist. Holding too long destroys anticipation.

Classic dramaturgical structures like the Three-Act Structure, the Hero's Journey, or Kishōtenketsu – these are maps. They don't help the story; they describe how attention works. Every film needs a dramaturgical reason for every scene. If you can't say why a scene comes at this point, it's probably misplaced. This isn't feeling; it's craft.
