High-output halogen lamp with focusable reflector — compact and punchy. Workhorse for tight exterior locations and space-constrained setups.

You need light for an exterior scene, but you have limited space and even less budget for a full HMI battery setup? That's where the Dux Kino comes in — a compact halogen fixture with a focusable reflector system that has proven itself in situations where size and weight are critical. This thing is damn bright for its size and can be precisely aimed down to the centimeter.

The Dux Kino operates with a powerful halogen lamp — typically 1000W to 2500W — and a reflector system that allows you to focus or spread the light beam. This is the crucial advantage: focus instead of fixate. On set, you mount the fixture on a pole, aim it sharply at your subject, and get direct, precise light without additional accessories. No diffusion panel, no extra frame needed — just the fixture, a C-stand, and a good grip. The heat output is considerable, but for short takes or exterior shoots where you need to be mobile, the trade-off is acceptable.

In use, its strength becomes apparent in guerrilla filmmaking or documentaries: you can place the fixture in a tight courtyard, on a balcony facade, or in a car window and create key light with penetrating power. The focusability makes it attractive for close-ups — you can narrow the spot tightly and drive it precisely onto the actor's face. For low-budget night exterior scenes, I've often used the Dux in combination with natural ambient light: it provides the hardness, while practical lights in the background maintain the context.

A few practical rules: The halogen lamp gets extremely hot — thermal protection is not a luxury, but a necessity. If actors or crew get closer than 2–3 meters, psychological distance is also needed; some find it uncomfortable. The color temperature is around 3200K, so typical tungsten — you'll correct it later or use compensating gels. Power consumption: 2500W means you need a proper power distribution, not a standard 16A household outlet.

The Dux Kino is not a universal tool, but a reliable problem-solver for compact lighting situations where halogen fixtures are still economically sensible — especially in the commercial and documentary sectors, where flexibility takes precedence over elegance.
