History & Development

DZOFilm unveiled the first Pictor generation at NAB in 2020, after the company was founded in 2019 as a subsidiary of the established lens manufacturer Jingying Optical. The series marked DZOFilm's entry into the professional cinema market after years of OEM production for other manufacturers. In 2022, the Pictor Macro variant (20-55mm T2.8 with 2:1 magnification) was introduced as an expansion for specialized applications. In 2023, DZOFilm launched the Pictor Super35-optimized version, specifically tuned for smaller sensors.

Practical Use in Film

The Pictor series quickly established itself in independent productions and streaming content due to its favorable price-performance ratio compared to established brands like Angenieux or Canon. Cinematographers appreciate the low focus breathing of under 1% and the consistent character between focal lengths. The relatively soft look is particularly suitable for narrative formats, while the high sharpness performance also enables commercial applications. Typical workflows integrate the complete series as a zoom set, with lens changes occurring without rig adjustments thanks to identical housing dimensions.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to established cinema zooms like the Angenieux Optimo series, the Pictor lenses offer a significantly more affordable price-performance ratio with a slightly lower zoom factor. In comparison to Canon CN-E or Fujinon MK zooms, the Pictor series is positioned in the mid-price segment with more professional build quality. As an alternative to prime sets, the Pictor zooms are suitable for productions with limited budgets or tight shooting schedules where lens changes need to be minimized.
