Low, wheeled light stand (approx. 24–48 in. height) used for ground-level sources — common for backlight or accent lighting setups.
Technical Details
Standard Low Boys have a minimum height of 30-35 cm and a leg spread of 75-90 cm. The construction is usually made of aluminum or steel, weighing between 2.5-4 kg. The central riser allows for stepless height adjustment via clamping screws or quick-release levers. Modern variants like the Matthews Low Boy feature additional stabilization weights in the legs. Baby Low Boys reach a maximum height of only 60 cm and are designed for lighter fixtures up to 7 kg.
History & Development
Low Boys originated in the 1940s in Hollywood studios when lighting technicians needed flexible solutions for low-key lighting and floor effects. Matthews Studio Equipment introduced the first standardized Low Boy in 1952, which quickly became an industry standard. In the 1970s, foldable versions for location shoots came onto the market. Modern developments include carbon fiber variants (since 2010) and Low Boys with integrated sandbag holders.
Practical Use in Film
Low Boys enable dramatic uplighting effects, such as those used in "Citizen Kane" (1941) for the famous ceiling shadows. In night scenes, LED panels or kinemax lights are positioned behind objects on Low Boys for rim lighting. In "Blade Runner 2049" (2017), Low Boys with RGB LEDs created the characteristic floor reflections in interiors. For product shots or tabletop shots, Low Boys are indispensable as they remain below the camera angle. The low center of gravity prevents tipping in wind or from cable pulls.
Comparison & Alternatives
Compared to regular light stands (1.2-4m height), Low Boys offer more stable ground positioning without sandbags. Turtle Bases are even lower (15 cm) but less flexible in height. C-stands with Low Boy adapters combine versatility with a low position but are bulkier to transport. Modern floor mounts with magnetic feet replace Low Boys on metal floors. For extreme low angles, lighting technicians use ground spreaders – flat tripod adapters without height adjustment that lie directly on the ground.
