Pre-Flashing / Pre-Exposure / Latensification

post flashing negative contrast film stock exposure

Photochemical technique where unexposed film stock receives controlled light exposure before primary shooting – reduces contrast by raising the characteristic curve's toe, adding density to shadows with minimal highlight impact.

What is Pre-Flashing?

Pre-flashing is a photochemical technique for contrast reduction in which unexposed film material is controllably exposed to a small amount of light before the actual shot. This raises the toe of the film curve and increases shadow detail.
