Showscan

Kubrick didn't just want sharper filming for 2001: A Space Odyssey — he wanted to change perception itself. The solution was Showscan: 65mm film at 60 frames per second instead of the then-standard 24fps. The result was a visual presence that seemed almost supernatural. Movements flowed with buttery smoothness, details shone with a clarity the human eye rarely experiences in reality. For space sequences, where every movement had to be controlled and precise, the process was ideal — it created a kind of hyperreal objectivity.

In practice, Showscan means significant technical hurdles. The 60fps requires double film speed and thus double raw material throughput. Exposure must be precisely controlled; any overexposure becomes immediately visible because the eye no longer forgives motion blur at this frame rate. Lighting becomes precision work — reflections, flicker, sensor artifacts are brutally apparent. On set, you notice it immediately: where you can otherwise mask underexposure, every mistake becomes a problem with Showscan. Projection requires special equipment; standard cinemas cannot show the format. This was already a killer argument in the 1980s.

Therefore, Showscan is practically dead today. Vertical format productions with high frame rates (High Frame Rate Cinema, see also HFR and digital 48fps standards) have translated the concept into the digital world — Peter Jackson experimented with it for The Hobbit. But audience resistance remained. The brain rebels against too much visual information; the fluidity seems artificial, almost like video. Kubrick understood something that was later forgotten: higher frame rate is not automatically better — it must serve the story.

For modern productions, Showscan no longer plays a role. Digital photography offers higher native resolutions without the raw material costs. Those who need fluidity and sharpness shoot with digital sensors and interpolate as needed. Showscan remains a relic — elegant, expensive, rendered unnecessary. But anyone who has seen 2001 in original Showscan will not forget that look.
