Anamorphic front element by SLR Magic with 2x horizontal squeeze for a CinemaScope look on standard lenses.

Technical Details

The SLR Magic 2x Anamorphic operates with a 2x squeeze factor and has a minimum focusing distance of 1.2 meters. The filter thread is 77mm with a total weight of 680 grams. The construction consists of 8 elements in 6 groups with a special coating to reduce reflections. The adapter produces characteristic horizontal lens flares and an oval bokeh. The system is available in different versions: the original 2x Anamorphic, the more compact 1.33x, and the 2x-50, which was specifically optimized for longer focal lengths.

History & Development

SLR Magic introduced the 2x Anamorphic in 2013 as an affordable alternative to professional anamorphic lenses, which can cost up to 50,000 Euros. The company recognized the growing demand in the independent film sector for the characteristic Cinemascope look. In 2015, a revised version followed with improved optical performance and reduced vignetting. The development directly responded to the boom in digital cinema cameras and the democratization of professional filmmaking technology.

Practical Use in Film

The adapter is mainly used on mirrorless cameras and DSLRs, for example, on Panasonic GH series or Sony A7 cameras. Independent productions use the system for feature films and music videos to achieve the classic anamorphic look. The workflow requires horizontal stretching by 200% in post-production. Advantages include significantly lower costs compared to native anamorphic lenses and the ability to continue using existing spherical lenses. Disadvantages are light loss of approximately 1.5 stops, reduced sharpness, and more complex focusing.

Comparison & Alternatives

In contrast to native anamorphic lenses like Cooke or Zeiss Master Anamorphics, the SLR Magic offers significantly lower optical quality but also a fraction of the cost. Modern alternatives include the Sirui 1.33x Anamorphic or VAZEN 1.8x. While professional productions rely on native anamorphic lenses, the SLR Magic is suitable for budgets under 50,000 Euros where the characteristic look is more important than absolute optical perfection.
