Fresnel fixture with adjustable reflector—creates focused beam with hard edge. Workhorse for key light and backlight on every set.

The spotlight is your workhorse in set lighting—a Fresnel fixture with enormous control over the beam. It has a Fresnel lens and a movable reflector behind it: the closer you push the reflector to the lens, the tighter the beam; the further away, the wider the illumination. This makes it incredibly flexible. You can create a tight, sharply defined spot or quickly open up the light without moving the lamp itself.

In practice, you use the spotlight as a key light when you need precise, sculpted illumination—classic in feature films, especially for portraits and dramatic lighting. The sharp edge of the light is its defining characteristic: it creates definition without you having to juggle flags and cutters. At the same time, it's your best tool for background separation. You throw a tight beam onto the background, light the foreground figure with a different quality—your image instantly has depth. The spotlight is also your go-to for accenting: a narrow beam on hair, on an object, on an architectural detail.

Technically, you need to know that the Fresnel lens generates heat buildup—the spotlight gets quite hot. In larger formats (5kW, 10kW), you'll need appropriate electrical supply and good ventilation. The edge of the light isn't completely hard like a follow spot; it's gradual, but significantly tighter than a PAR can or an unframed soft light. This is exactly the right degree for most dramatic requirements. If you need an absolutely hard edge—like with theater spotlights—you'd reach for a follow spot or projection attachments.

The spotlight works with various light sources: classic tungsten (3200K), and now also with HMI technology (5600K) for daylight compatibility. The color temperature is stable, and the light quality remains consistent when you change the focus. This distinguishes it from open-face reflectors, where the heat of the light leads to visible flicker. Sizes range from 1kW to 10kW; the 2kW spotlight is your standard workhorse for medium set sizes.
