Teradek is a manufacturer of wireless video transmission systems for film sets, enabling cable-free signal transfer between cameras and monitors.
Technical Details
The current Bolt 6 systems transmit 4K60 signals over a distance of up to 1,500 meters with a direct line of sight, while the more compact Ace models transmit HD signals up to 150 meters. The devices operate in the 5GHz and 6GHz frequency bands with automatic frequency hopping to avoid interference. Bolt systems support up to six simultaneous receivers (1:6 distribution), while Ace models are limited to one receiver. Power consumption is 12-15 watts at the transmitter, and the devices weigh between 200g (Ace 500) and 450g (Bolt 6 LT).
History & Development
Teradek launched the Cube in 2010 as the first compact streaming device, followed in 2013 by the first Bolt system with 3G-SDI support. In 2016, the company introduced the first wireless 4K transmission with the Bolt 1000, followed in 2019 by the Bolt 4K Max with 12G-SDI support. The sixth Bolt generation from 2021 reduced latency to under 0.7 milliseconds and introduced AES-256 encryption.
Practical Use in Film
On "The Revenant" (2015), Teradek systems enabled Emmanuel Lubezki to wirelessly transmit Arri Alexa signals during extreme handheld sequences in the wilderness. "1917" (2019) utilized Bolt systems for the seemingly endless long takes, where cinematographer Roger Deakins relayed the signal through multiple relay stations. The systems allow for Video Village monitoring without cable runs, enable camera rigs in inaccessible positions, and reduce trip hazards on set. Disadvantages include potential radio interference in urban areas and limited range without a line of sight.
Comparison & Alternatives
Main competitors include Paralinx (now part of Tiffen) with Tomahawk systems and SmallHD with Focus Pro monitors featuring integrated wireless technology. Teradek dominates high-end productions with the lowest latency and highest range, while more affordable alternatives like Hollyland Mars are sufficient for smaller productions. For multi-camera setups, Teradek offers central signal distribution with the RT.HUB, while competitors typically require point-to-point connections.
