Teradek Bolt transmits uncompressed HD/4K video wirelessly with under 1ms latency. Industry standard for wireless video on professional film sets.

Technical Details

The Bolt system utilizes zero-delay technology with 256-bit AES encryption and operates with a bandwidth of up to 6 Gbps. The Pro models support 4K60p signals, while standard versions are limited to 1080p60. The system employs proprietary MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) antenna technology with automatic channel selection for interference avoidance. Current model lines include Bolt 4K LT, Bolt 4K Pro, Bolt XT, and the compact Bolt 500. The devices weigh between 200-400 grams and feature Sony NP-F battery connections or DC input.

History & Development

Teradek introduced the first Bolt system in 2011, revolutionizing wireless video transmission on set. In 2014, the Bolt Pro followed with extended range, and in 2017, the first 4K-capable model, Bolt 4K. The Bolt 4K LT, introduced in 2019, significantly reduced cost and size. The latest generation, Bolt 6 (2022), integrates Wi-Fi 6E technology for the first time and expands transmission to 6K resolution at 30fps.

Practical Application in Film

Bolt systems enable camera movements with Steadicams, drone shots, or hard-to-reach camera positions without a cable connection to the video village. Bolt systems were used for the spectacular chase sequences in "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) and for the continuous camera movements in "1917" (2019). The system transmits live feeds to up to four receivers simultaneously, allowing the director, script supervisor, and producer to follow the action in parallel. Disadvantages include battery consumption, potential signal interference with metal structures, and the need for line-of-sight.

Comparison & Alternatives

Main competitors include Paralinx Arrow, Atomos Ninja Cast, and Accsoon CineEye systems. While Paralinx focuses on robust metal casings, Teradek excels with the lowest latency. Atomos solutions integrate recording functions but do not achieve Bolt's range. For budget productions, Accsoon devices are suitable with lower range and higher latency. For critical live transmissions or high-frequency camera movements, the Bolt system remains the first choice due to its zero-delay performance.
