Texturing is a specialized term used in filmmaking and video production.

Technical Details

Modern texturing workflows use UV mapping with resolutions from 2K (2048×2048) to 8K (8192×8192) pixels. Typical maps include Diffuse (base color), Normal (surface details), Specular (reflection behavior), Roughness, and Displacement (height information). UDIM tiles enable complex objects with up to 100 separate texture coordinates. Common file formats are OpenEXR for HDR textures and TIFF for standard maps. Mari by Foundry and Substance Painter by Adobe dominate as professional texturing tools.

History & Development

Edwin Catmull developed the first texture mapping system at the University of Utah in 1974. In 1981, James Blinn introduced Bump Mapping, and in 1985, Paul Heckbert expanded the technology with Mipmapping for quality improvement. The first commercial use occurred in 1982 in "Tron." Normal Mapping became established from 2000 onwards, and Physically Based Rendering (PBR) became the standard from 2012. Substance Designer revolutionized procedural texture creation in 2014.

Practical Application in Film

"Avatar" (2009) used over 2TB of texture data for Pandora's flora. "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) employed 16K textures for Thanos' skin details. Standard workflows begin with high-poly sculpting in ZBrush, followed by retopology and UV layout. Subsequently, detail maps are baked onto low-poly geometry. Look development artists create material libraries with standardized PBR values. Render engines like Arnold or V-Ray optimize texture streaming for scenes with over 50GB of texture data.

Texturing differs from shading by specific image content versus mathematical material functions. Substance-based procedural textures are increasingly replacing photogrammetric approaches. PTEX eliminates UV seams through per-face texturing but increases memory requirements by 40%.
