Professional 720W daylight-balanced COB LED monolight with output comparable to 1200W HMI at a fraction of energy consumption.

The Aputure LS 600d Pro is a high-output COB (Chip on Board) LED daylight fixture that achieves light output comparable to 1200W HMI lights, consuming only a fraction of the power. The Pro version features improved electronics, multi-voltage battery operation, and a weather-resistant housing.

History & Development

Aputure introduced the 600d in 2020 as the successor to the 300d series, establishing the 600-watt class in LED lighting. The company was founded in Shenzhen in 2005, initially focusing on camera accessories before entering the LED market in 2014 with the AL-528 series. The 600d marked a breakthrough for high-performance, affordable LED panels in the semi-professional and professional sectors. In 2021, the 600d Pro followed with improved electronics and higher light output.

Practical Use in Film

The 600d primarily serves as a daylight key light indoors or as a fill light for exterior shots. Gaffers frequently use it to light windows, simulating or enhancing natural daylight. With a 90cm octabox, the fixture is suitable for soft portrait lighting, while with a Fresnel lens, it provides a focused beam for selective illumination. Its silent operation makes it particularly valuable during sound recording. Critical considerations include heat generation during long takes and the reliance on mains power or heavy batteries for full output.

Comparison & Alternatives

Compared to HMI fixtures like the ARRI M18, the 600d offers instant availability without warm-up time, lower power consumption, and no UV radiation. However, its light output reaches only about 60% of comparable HMI systems. Direct competitors include the Godox VL300, the Nanlite Forza 720, and the Prolycht Orion 675 FS. ARRI counters with the SkyPanel S30-C, which offers RGB capabilities but costs three times as much. For budget productions, the 600d often replaces several smaller panels, while high-end productions use it as a complementary fill light alongside larger tungsten or HMI units.
