Compact LED lighting fixture series offering full-color capability and silent operation for documentary and narrative production.

Technical Details

The Amaran series is divided into AL-M (Mini Panels), AL-H (Handheld Panels), and COB variants. The flagship AL-528S achieves 3400 Lux at a meter distance, while the compact AL-M9 delivers 900 Lux at a weight of 95 grams. CRI values are consistently above 95, with a TLCI index of at least 96. The units use Sony NP-F batteries or DC power supply, with stepless dimming from 1-100%. Newer models like the 200 series integrate Bluetooth control and offer RGB+WW spectra with over 16 million color combinations.

History & Development

Aputure introduced the Amaran line in 2014 in response to the growing demand for affordable LED solutions. The first model, AL-160, established the design principle of compact panels with standard batteries. In 2017, the AL-H198 series expanded the portfolio with High CRI technology, followed in 2019 by the COB series, marking the entry into the full-spectrum segment. The 200 series from 2021 marked the transition to app-based control and full-color LEDs.

Practical Application in Film

Amaran lights are primarily suitable for documentaries, corporate videos, and low-budget productions. The AL-M9 serves as subtle fill light in interviews, while AL-528 panels are used as broad light sources for green screen shots. The COB variants replace classic Tungsten spots up to 650W in independent productions. Advantages include low heat development and quiet operation, disadvantages include limited light output and an accessory ecosystem often too narrow for professional sets.

Comparison & Alternatives

Amaran competes directly with Godox LC500R and the Nanlite Forza series in the budget segment. Compared to Aputure's own Light Storm series, Amaran units offer 60-70% of the light output at half the price. They represent the standard for smartphone content and YouTube productions; however, for feature films, cinematographers usually opt for ARRI Orbiter or Aputure 600D. The choice between Amaran and professional equipment depends on the required amount of light per setup and the available grip equipment.
